Who will become America’s first FASHION STAR?

Last weekend we had our dishwasher replaced so I had to stay home to let the tradesmen in. They have spent 2,5 hours working hard in the kitchen whilst to kill boredom, I started to browse among the TV channels. I have discovered some very interesting shows and sitcoms which I have seen the first (and the last) time.. However, one of them was pretty remarkable and nailed me to the coach! It was a fashion designer show similar to “The Voice” or “Dancing with the Stars” but with fashion designers competing against each other..Yippie!! If someone is interested in learning more about the world of fashion, this show provides a great opportunity to gain insight into the big stores’ way of thinking.. what makes them buy a design and what are the sales volumes driven by!

The Show

“NBC kicks off the new year with the new reality competition series “Fashion Star,” which will search for the next big brand in fashion. Featuring host and executive producer Elle Macpherson along with celebrity mentors Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos, the series will give 14 unknown designers the chance to win a multi-million dollar prize to launch their collections in three of America’s largest retailers: Macy’s, H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Each week, the show will begin with an exhilarating fashion show unlike anything seen before featuring musical performances, dancers and models in front of a studio audience. Every fashion show will be built around a weekly challenge that is designed to further develop and expand the designers’ brands.

The series will feature clothes designed for America to buy, and it has enlisted three of the world’s top retailers to help in the decision-making process. Caprice Willard (Macy’s), Terron E. Schaefer (Saks Fifth Avenue) and Nicole Christie (H&M) will serve as the judges who make on-the-spot decisions as they vie for the right to purchase and exclusively carry the work of the up-and-coming designers each week.

At the end of each episode, America will have the chance to immediately purchase the winning designs showcased on the episode that week. What viewers see on TV that night will be on the streets and in stores immediately. With just a single trip down the runway, “Fashion Star” will change the lives and fortunes of these aspiring designers forever.

Each week, designers who do not sell any of their items to the buyers will be up for elimination. In addition, celebrity mentors Simpson, Richie and Varvatos will be able to save one of these designers from the chopping block.”

The Contestants

Some of them have been raised in the Philippines, El Salvador or Argentina, others were born in the different states of the US and two of them are aiming to make their brands worldwide known coming straight from Australia! It’s not difficult to become their fan.. you feel close to them once you hear their story. They are all working hard for their lifelong dreams.. one of them began selling her designs in the bathroom during her lunchbreak at a company where she was working as a secretary. The other has bought a used sawing machine from the internet to pursue her fashion career.. They all have different backgrounds starting their career as school teachers or fashion models, couple of them own their own boutiques already, and some of them have just left the corporate world without any backup plan, putting everything on the line for the show.

The Mentors

Nicole Richie: fashion designer, TV actress, bestseller writer and philantropist providing meaningful opportunities for children and youth around the world.

John Varvatos: fashion designer, worked for Ralph Lauren and Celvin Klein, designer of the year in 2007, rock ‘n’ roll inspired radio show host.

Jessica Simpson: international star and media darling, actress, singer and songwriter, designer with 22 product categories, business woman, red carpet fashion icon.

The Buyers

Caprice Willard: vice president/regional planning manager for women’s apparel for Macy’s southwest region.

Nicole Christie: was one of the first 50 employees hired to start the US sales organization for H&M. Today she is the communications manager for North America.

Terron Schaefer: Saks Fifth Avenue’s executive vice-president and chief creative officer.

The Prize

In the end, one designer will successfully combine fashion and business to become the next Fashion Star and will receive the prize of a lifetime – $6,000,000 in orders for capsule collections in Macy’s, H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue stores.
