Lady Gaga truly dominated the night of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. She won in eight categories and – grab a chair – she was wearing a garment made of meat!! Yes, meat.
Dress, boots, purse and a hat, all fabricated from the flesh of dead animals,
for the biggest enjoyment of the Paparazzi
When I’ve heard this, I thought this Lady is worth a little bit of investigation so I’ve started to find out more about who she is and why does she have the inner urge to shock the pop audience of the world??
So many things I didn’t know about her. For instance that her real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, however her stage name was inspired by one of her role models, Freddy Mercury singing “RadioGaGa”. Or that she surprisingly studied at a Roman Catholic all-girl school or that she was discovered by Akon!!
She has sold an estimated 23 million albums and 64 million singles worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Her achievements include 5 Grammy-Awards and 13 MTV Music Awards. Lady Gaga has consecutively appeared on Billboard magazine’s Artist of the Year, ranked fourth in VH1’s list of 100 Greatest Women in Music, is regularly placed on lists composed by Forbes magazine and was named one of the most influential people in the world by Time magazine.
Nice achievements, but I am still more interested in what has actually shaped her public image as I believe it strongly contributes to her significant success.
The first person she says who influenced her is her aunt who died in lupus aged 19, 12 years before Gaga’s birth. Gaga thinks she has two hearts and two souls, and the dead aunty actually lives on through her inspiring all of her music and art. Well, no comment.. we can accept the explanation for Gaga’s crazy extravaganza that the aunty died as a virgin, therefore missed out on lots of things and now tries to catch up through wearing blood soaked dresses on the stage with Gaga.
From the fashion’s perspective, she considers Cher, Donatella Versace and British fashion designer Alexander McQuenn as an inspiration. McQueen was well-known for his provocative fashion shows. Now I know where does Gaga’s four floor high crazy shoes come from!!
Alexander Mcqueen designs:

All right, the mystery of the shoes has been revealed. But where does the rest come from?
Gaga has her own creative production team, which she handles personally, called the Haus of Gaga. They create many of her clothes, stage props, and hairdos, aiming to fulfil her requirements: “I want the imagery be so strong that fans will want to eat and taste and lick every part of us.”
I am not sure about the licking part, however it’s a fact that despite her provocative appearance she mostly receives positive reviews. Critics say she brings attention to modern social issues as she is a role model, self –esteem booster for her sometimes outcast fans. She is considered to be a gay icon, she has revealed her own bisexuality talking about the difficulties this caused in her life and she is always aiming to represent human rights saying “If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones. “
Ahha! Although I would prefer she keeps her sex issues behind the closed doors of a bedroom, we are getting closer to her real motifs behind the Poker Face. Besides her career in music, Gaga also contributes to various charities. She helped to raise funds for the victims of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, she supports the fight against HIV and AIDS and last but not least she has launched her own non-profit organization, the Born This Way Foundation, which focuses on youth empowerment and issues like self-confidence, anti-bullying, mentoring and career development.
She seems to be at one with the average American citizen, moreover, from fashion perspective, she managed to bring the before unreachable Haute Couture creations closer, by modelling them in her popular music videos and wearing them on the red carpet. She is washing away the line between fashion and art, bringing performance art successfully into the mainstream with her flamboyant, outré ensembles.
You know what Gaga?? Keep on doing your thing, Just Dance!
